The Mephistophelian Figure of Apartheid: Craig Williamson, Assassin and Spy
A Cold War Spy and Apartheid Assassin
Craig Michael Williamson, born in 1949, was a former officer in the South African Police who was exposed as a spy and assassin for the Security Branch during the apartheid era. A sinister figure, he infiltrated anti-apartheid organizations, leading a double life as a police informant and assassin.
Infiltrating the White Left and Anti-Apartheid Community
Throughout the 1970s, Williamson's mission was to penetrate the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS), the white left, and the anti-apartheid community in exile, including the African National Congress (ANC). He used his charm and intelligence to gain access to their inner circles, reporting back sensitive information to the Security Branch.
Disappearing into Post-Liberation South Africa
After his exposure and the end of apartheid, Williamson disappeared into obscurity. Hundreds of other apartheid-era operatives have also vanished into the forgotten corners of post-liberation South Africa, their past actions shrouded in silence.
