The History of the West Indies Federation

A brief overview

The West Indies is a subregion of North America surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea which comprises 13 independent island. Its flag was used between 1958 and 1962 and bore four equally spaced narrow white stripes with a large orange-gold circle over.

Origins

The West Indies Federation existed from 3 rd January 1958 31 st May 1962. Its flag was designed by Edna Manley (1900-1987) who is considered to be the mother of Jamaican art. The West Indies Federation, also known as the West Indies, the Federation of the West Indies, or the West Indian Federation, was a short-lived political union of several Caribbean islands.

The Federation was established in 1958, and its flag was designed by Edna Manley. The flag was blue with four white horizontal wavy lines and a gold disc in the centre. The wavy lines represented the Caribbean Sea, and the gold disc represented the sun.

The Federation was dissolved in 1962 after Jamaica voted to leave the union. The other members of the Federation subsequently formed the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM).
