Nearly 1000 new species were discovered in 2023 by scientists at London's Natural History Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. The 12 most intriguing animal discoveries of 2021 were chosen by editors as the most compelling wildlife findings of the year.

California Academy of Sciences researchers and their international collaborators discovered 146 new animal, plant, and fungi species in 2021. This year, Mongabay reported on newly described species from nearly every continent, including a fuzzy orange bat from West Africa and a tiny, transparent shrimp from the deep sea.
